Career Advising

Ideally a student would enter the I-BEST program knowing exactly what they want to do and what the job entails.  However,  you may have students who are still exploring their options and are taking advantage of supported instruction.

Most college campuses have career centers that will help students in choosing their career path, but once the students are in your classroom, you officially or unofficially become their career advisor.  This student connection with a faculty member has proven to be a major factor in student retention rates.

If the career path requires further education beyond I-BEST, you may want to include academic advising.

Here are some suggested steps and activities you can take to ensure the students will end up on the right path.

Goal Setting

  • What kind of job do you want?
  • What kind of jobs are out there?
  • What kind of skills and training do you need for this job?

  • Job searches
  • Job shadows
  • Informational interviews
  • Internships
  • Resume writing
  • Mock job interviews
  • Find mentors
